Our Story
The Cecilia Collective is a vocal treble ensemble founded by Sophie Clarke and Marjorie Sheiman. The mission of The Cecilia Collective (TCC) is to empower women in classical music through two main initiatives: 1. to expand the classical music performance canon by programming concerts with music exclusively written by women and gender-marginalized composers and 2. to provide gender-marginalized singers with more performance opportunities by not only presenting concerts with the primary TCC ensemble, but also by supplementing those concerts with additional soloists for art song and aria performances. The hybrid TCC recitals will also educate the general public on the diverse and exceptionally beautiful works written by gender-marginalized composers.
The name for The Cecilia Collective is inspired by Saint Cecilia the patron saint of singers and music. The name also evokes our passion for early music. In addition to early music, we are also champions of new music. We are partnering with emerging female and non-binary composers to create new commissions for The Cecilia Collective. Our next upcoming commission is a collaboration with Meg Huskin, co-founder of Tell Tale Opera.
